Active citizenship that supports intergenerational artistic intervention

How can we build bridges between generations to promote social cohesion and digital inclusion?

Promoting community dynamism and citizenship!

In 2021, the Museu do Bairro pilot project began: an active citizenship project based on personal artistic intervention, where students are invited to examine and record their perspective on the tangible and intangible heritage of their community.

The aim of the Neighbourhood Museum Between Generations is to enhance communities and boost the social and digital inclusion of seniors in the Alcântara and Ajuda BIPs through intergenerational groups – children, teenagers, adults and the elderly – who make the heritage of western Lisbon more dynamic while increasing media literacy and citizen participation.

Through participatory photography, everyone is challenged to (re)discover their ‘Neighborhood’ – with artistic research to create exhibition content and promote the appreciation of their community.

Discovering tangible and intangible heritage through participatory photography

Cultural Heritage can be defined as a tangible and/or intangible legacy that constitute the culture of a group or people.

Just as in a museum we find works that have value (pictures, paintings, objects, etc.), in the Museum of the Neighborhood we will find what we value in the community: the churches, the gardens, the beach, the people, the stories, etc.

Material cultural heritage is made up of tangible and concrete elements, for example, works of art and churches.

Intangible cultural heritage relates to the knowledge, skills, beliefs, practices and customs of communities.

And then there’s the natural heritage: the forests, the coast, the sea or lake.
