Saying “we are here” is more than fixing a point on a map. It means affirming a position, occupying a space, inhabiting a place.

This exhibition is the result of a collective gesture by those who observe, question and interpret the area where they live. With the Museu do Bairro project, 133 young people from Oeiras have turned photography into a tool for expression and citizenship.

Throughout a participatory photography process, students from 6 classes at the Amélia Rey Colaço (Linda-a-Velha) and Professor Santana Castilho (Miraflores) schools were invited to take a close and careful look at their daily lives. Between natural and urban spaces, between routines, encounters and tensions, they transformed their common path into territory and reflected on the places they occupy and dream of for Oeiras and its communities.

Turning a geographical coordinate into a place is a collective exercise. Here, these young artists reveal the knowledge and poetics they weave in their daily lives to appropriate their surroundings.
