After the training and the international meeting with professionals who work with young people, where urban laboratories were developed with young people from various neighborhoods in Lisbon – we launched the publication that has been tested and now translated into Portuguese: ‘URBEX Toolbox – Urban exploration for young people‘ – the original English version.
A free resource for educators, teachers, local activists, urban planners and social sector professionals. An innovative publication that uses urban exploration as an educational model, with a focus on young people aged 16 to 25.
The URBEX Toolbox – Urban exploration for young people’ is the first tool of the Erasmus+ UrbEX Project, a partnership between organizations from Lisbon, Palermo (Italy), Seville (Spain), Toulouse (France) and Berlin (Germany), which seeks to involve young people through the spatial exploration of their neighbourhood and city – groups of young people from the 4 cities are currently meeting to co-create the second UrbEX material.
This manual aims to bring tools to the different types of organizations, projects, community centers and informal groups that are interested in this approach – which also includes working with groups at risk of exclusion or living in vulnerable contexts. It has three sections – the first introduces the neighborhood as a learning experience that challenges the negative context of ‘street school’. The second presents the steps for any Urban Exploration project with young people – always accompanied by examples of good practice. And the third compiles methodologies and creative tools for a facilitator in this non-formal education.
We invite all people who do research or who are professionals in the field of youth to the URBEX International Conference that will close the project in October in Berlin – this is the call for papers and to come and present the work you do with young people, to be included in the international Urbex network – Urban exploration for young people.
For those of you who want to try out this URBEX Toolbox – we’d love to have your feedback and we’d also like to invite you to join the Urbex Network:
