The Neighborhood Museum, an integral part of the Oeiras Educa+ Program, strengthens the link between formal and non-formal education, standing out as an innovative project promoted by 4Change and the Municipality of Oeiras since 2019. With the aim of providing meaningful activities for the community, Museu do Bairro stands out as an initiative that combines the artistic component and participatory methodology, revealing its potential through the unique eyes of young people.
By crossing themes and stimulating creative expression, the Museu do Bairro contributes to the deconstruction of prejudices inherent in the complex concept of identity in today’s societies. Dr. Jorge Barreto Xavier, Municipal Director of Education, Social Development and Culture at Oeiras City Council, highlights: ” Young people are challenged to question their communities, their groups or their values, whether through group work, participatory methodology or the free expression of creativity.“
Each class involved takes part in six 90-minute workshops, in which they design, develop and build their own community exhibitions. The Museu do Bairro is not only a repository of spaces and works, but also a guardian of the stories of the people who make Oeiras a living municipality. The appropriation of heritage and the development of a sense of belonging have been shown to increase levels of social integration among participants, culminating in the creation of exhibition content that reflects local authenticity.
This week sees the launch of the last places to register for classes in this project. Interested schools can register via the Portal https://www.oeiraseduca.ptgiving young people the opportunity to become the architects of a museum that celebrates Oeiras’ unique identity.
